What Is a Soul Sister?

For Jessie, on your birthday
You might think I’m a little delusional.
Honestly—same.
But in a world that crowns the fake,
Being real can look a little wild.
And if “soul sister” means anything,
It must mean you.
I once had a friend named Sonja.
The kind of woman who ran towards love
Not away from it.
She saw me across the room
After half a year apart,
Threw her arms around me,
And said, “You’re my soul sister.”
I felt it.
Like some old knowing,
Like we’d done this before.
We’d only met once or twice a year for the last decade
But with some people,
Time doesn’t matter.
The bond is older than this life.
She was one of those rare lights
A presence that made you feel seen
Without having to explain.
I’ve been told I do that too.
Maybe that’s how soul sisters find each other.
Like constellations
Recognizing patterns in the chaos.
But what is a soul sister, really?
She’s a woman who wants to be free
Not just in body, but in spirit.
To feel what she feels.
To move how she wants.
To speak, to dress, to dream, to be
Without apology.
Because even now,
Freedom isn’t a gift—
It’s a fight.
A soul sister sees past the mask.
She meets your soul first.
She’s not new—
She’s just familiar in a way you can’t explain.
She’s the voice that says keep going,
Even when you can’t hear your own.
I lost one soul sister.
But in these past few years,
I found another.
One taught me the ache of shrinking into someone else's mould.
The other? She showed me what it means to be
Wild, whole, and unafraid.
Jessie—That’s you.
Your voice, your fire,
Your fierce softness—
They reminded me that
Others like me exist.
That I’m not alone.
That I get to dream louder.
You lit my path
Without even knowing it.
I only wish I had been to Sonja
What you’ve been to me.
But today,
On your birthday,
I just want to say:
Thank you for existing.
Thank you for being you.
Thank you for making this world
A little brighter,
A little braver,
And a lot more real.
Happy birthday. 💕
